SOLD Armchair “La Fonda” by Charles & Ray Eames

for La Fonda Del Sol in New York, Switzerland 1961

The La Fonda armchairs are named after the legendary restaurant La Fonda Del Sol in New York, which was established in 1961. Charles & Ray Eames were asked to design this chair for the restaurant`s dining room, whose interior was designed by their friend Alexander Girard. The seating elements should harmonize perfectly with the rest of the furniture. The La Fonda was revolutionary for the Eames as it had the first fixed upholstery which would later be used with all plastic chairs. It also had a special gel mixed with the mold to make the fiberglass matte in finish. This resulted in the shell only ever being available in one color. The fully upholstered version has moulded polyurethane foam padding covered in fabric, attached to the shell with a welted edge. This Chair is probably one of the most elegant and unconventional bases ever designed by the Eameses.
