SOLD Leather Sofa “Stringa” by Gae Aulenti

for Poltranova, Italy 1962

The “Stringa” sofa designed by Gae Aulenti for Poltranova in 1962 has a tubular chrome frame that holds leather seats on top of felt upholstered cushions. The leather cushions are attached with leather straps over the frame. The large 3-seater sofa has a beautiful patina and is very comfortable. The Sofa is in very good vintage used condition for structure and leather; only one little defect consists in the felt upholstered cushion of the superior part, as you can see in the pictures. Gae Aulenti (1927-2012) is one of the most influential architects and designers of the post-war period. Gae Aulenti was less interested in maintaining a homogenous style than in providing visionary solutions to problems. Nevertheless, almost all of her designs share a striking formal language and emblematic silhouettes.

Her objects arrest the eye and remain unforgettable. Gae was well known for several large-scale museum projects, including the Musée d‘Orsay (1980 – 1986) and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, as well as the restoration of the famous Palazzo Grassi in Venice and the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. She was one of the few women designing in the post-war period in Italy, where Italian designers sought to make meaningful connections to production principles beyond Italy.
